Impacts of winter cover cropping on soil moisture and evapotranspiration in California's specialty crop fields may be minimal during winter months

چکیده
As fresh water supplies become more unreliable, variable and expensive, the water-related implications of sustainable agriculture practices such as cover cropping are drawing increasing attention from California's agricultural communities. However, adoption winter remains limited among specialty crop growers who face uncertainty regarding use this practice. To investigate how crops affect soil evapotranspiration on farm fields, we studied three systems that span climatic farming conditions in Central Valley: processing tomato fields with crop, almond orchards native vegetation. From 2016 to 2019, collected moisture data (3 years neutron hydroprobe gravimetric tests at 10 field sites) measurements (2 two cropped control (clean-cultivated, bare ground) plots during months. Generally, there were not significant differences between throughout or end seasons, while evapo-transpirative losses due negligible relative clean-cultivated soil. Our results suggest Valley may break even terms actual consumptive use. California high-value can likely adopt without altering their irrigation plans management practices.

Wheat Yields, Nitrogen Uptake, and Soil Moisture Following Winter Legume Cover Crop vs. Fallow
Long-term use of fallow in dryland wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) systems can increase erosion and decrease soil fertility. One possible solution is to grow a green manure crop during the fallow period. To evaluate the short-term effects of substituting a winter legume green manure for fallow in a 2-vr wheat rotation, a series of experiments were conducted in the Sacramento Valley of California f...

Residue management in cropping systems is useful to improve soil quality. However, the studies on the effects of residue management on the enzyme activities and microbial community of soils in South China are few. Therefore, the effects of incorporating winter cover crop residue with a double-cropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) system on soil enzyme activities and microbial community in Southern Ch...
متن کاملImpacts of gypsum and winter cover crops on soil physical properties and crop productivity when irrigated with saline water
Reuse of saline subsurface drainage water for irrigation has been identi®ed as a potential option for managing drainage volumes and sustaining crop productivity in California's San Joaquin Valley. Soil surface structural instability, crusting and poor stand establishment may, however, be constraints in drainage reuse systems. The objective of this ®eld study was to evaluate the effectiveness of...
متن کاملPreliminary Study on Soil Moisture Forecast of Winter Wheat
Using four groups of survey data of soil moisture of winter wheat from returning green stage to harvest stage in Daxing region, the variation laws of soil moisture exponential depletion relations in 0-60cm depths during different growth stage are analyzed ,and based on soil moisture exponential depletion relations the forecast model of soil moisture depletion is built. The results indicate that...
